Recording moths in the Vice-county of Surrey (VC17)

Moths in Surrey

Welcome to Surrey Moths!

This website covers the macro and micro-moths recorded in Surrey, including the area of Greater London that falls within the historical vice-county boundary.

The main purpose of this website is to provide comprehensive accounts, including 1 km distribution maps and phenology of the moths recorded in Surrey, the latest moth news, and inform how to forward records for verification.

Smartphone functionality: Depending on which browser you use, the autocomplete search function may not work properly, i.e. as you type, the dropdown list of species possibilities doesn't show. On Android, it works well with Samsung Internet Browser and Google Chrome, while in Microsoft Edge, Firefox and Opera, it doesn't. It works in Safari on iOS.

We want your records!

We are kindly asking all recorders who have recorded moths in Surrey to resubmit records from 2021 to 2025 with 2025 taking priority, followed by 2024, 2023, etc.; however, in the long term we want to request all records prior up to and including 2020 to fill in the gaps that we are aware exist.

Contact us for further information.

We want your images!

Do you have any good quality moth images, especially of Surrey provenance, that you will be happy for us to use in this website? We are also happy to accept images of other moths, especially those that are rare in Surrey.

Ideally, images should be saved as a JPG and at least 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high or better. Please also supply, if at all possible the date and location where the image was taken, although this is not essential.

We will credit all images.

Contact us for further information or to forward your images.
